Nudge

Nudge

With nothing else to do (and nowhere else to go), Shae started culture caroling - standing at the edges of windows in the deep of night, singing softly about a world that could be. Every now and again, lights came on and drapes would part to reveal a face at the window smiling. Every now and again, lights came on in the road (with sirens muted) to reveal faces near to Shae's not smiling. "Wrong window; my apologies," was the honest explanation and it could all move on - the unchanged lives in progress and life in general. Friends and patrons left money and food and notes; one turned their shed into the tiniest of apartments with a hammock bed (and Shae marveled). "What is it supposed to DO, though?" was the question most asked and, "Nudge the wheel a bit" was the only answer. "If we've dreamed this world, then our dreams must change," Shae explained, and so it was. Penniless but not purposeless, Shae considered the efforts small and barely noteworthy, but this was the first dreamsinger to appear on the planet in almost a thousand years and the stars stared down, transfixed.
