“You’ve made a living - and architectural history - building treehouses for adults,” the interviewer opened, setting the tone. “What is it about treehouses that stand the test of time?” Sel took a deep breath to remove the look of “I’d rather have a colonoscopy than be here” on their face. “If you’ve ever had to run and hide, you know the answer. If you’d ever sought out the perfect place to think about your life until you were strong enough to change it, you know the answer.” The interviewer was stunned silent, but two of the four camera people were nodding. “If you were ever not okay - dangerously not okay - and needed to flood the cracks in you with tears to start healing,” Sel continued, “then you know that trees listen, won’t judge, and they will never betray you. I build houses there, in that place.” Four people came up to Sel at the break; 5 more called the office and left voicemails.
