Well

Well

They cut through the fields on a dare and discovered the ancient wishing well on the far hillside. "Bet you this stupid thing is dry as dust," said one of the miscreants, who spat disrespectfully into its depths. His companion, however, gave the well an apologetic pat (running a gentle hand along the top stones) before they ran off. The first would drown on a cloudless day in spring; there would be no easy explanation for it. Only the lower level of the boat had filled with water while everything else was dry, as if the sky had spit wave upon wave relentlessly into the cabin where he'd been watching TV. The second never wanted for a moment of compassion when they were downtrodden and weary; there was always someone who saw the good in them and placed an understanding hand upon their shoulder.
