Preparations

Preparations

Grandmother sat on a stool in the kitchen pedaling to turn the grinding stone; she was sharpening her knives and hatchets. Avery started when he entered to get coffee and stood, frozen, in the doorway. "New year," she whispered, eyes focused on the wheel. "Unknown territory. Good idea to get ready." Avery backed out of the room slowly, telling himself that going out for coffee and being social would probably be good for him. Preparedness was fine, but he chose to be more positive and hopeful about the future overall. This wasn't the first time he and Granny had agreed to disagree.
